Today we hosted our Taylor Swift Literacy Day Camp, and it was a huge success! This event was so special to me. Taylor Swift is such a phenomenon right now, and what I love most about her is her writing. I really wanted to plan an event that helps young children realize that reading and writing is woven into so many aspects of our culture, and that pop culture is no exception. I see Taylor, and many other singer/songwriters, as poets, creators, and experts in their craft. I hope that, after today, our attendees do, too.
One of the best things about today was that we had a group of children who really didn’t know each other at the start of the day who became friends and made some great memories together. In true Academic Advantage fashion, we kept the group small so we could focus on each child individually. That’s really important to me. I always want to be able to provide support to each child and to encourage them to meet their potential.
At the end of the camp, I asked the kids to complete a survey. When asked if they would come back to another camp with us, they all said YES! I asked them for ideas of future camps, and many of them suggested animals: specifically, dogs and cats (KITTY CAMP – I loved that one!). Perhaps there will be other camps in the near future!
For now, to the families who joined us today and to my family, who helped out in so many ways, I say, “I HAD THE BEST DAY WITH YOU TODAY.”
